There's a first time for everything.People love to be first (look at any comments on TMZ), and when it comes to history, recording "first ofs" is pretty important. We learned plenty about historic first times in our textbooks over the years, from landmark achievements in politics to science to pop culture: George Washington was our first U.S. president, Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, the Wright brothers were the first to fly a plane and Hattie McDaniel was the first black person to win an Oscar, to name a few. Those are all pretty famous firsts that (I hope) you'd know if they were Jeopardy questions.
However, there are plenty of firsts that happened under the radar that are just as interesting. For example, you know Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone... but do you know what the first words spoken over it were? Or that the first selfie was taken nearly 200 YEARS ago? The first victim of a car accident was a well known scientist, and the first successful plastic surgery was done on a WWI soldier. Fascinating!
